We just got the sad news that soul-funk singer Sharon Jones – who leads the band the Dap-Kings, one of the scheduled headliners at the upcoming Clearwater Festival – has been diagnosed with stage-one bile-duct cancer.
According to a statement posted on the band’s website, Jones’ cancer was caught early and has not spread, but she must have immediate surgery and will have a length convalescence. She is, however, expected to make a full recovery.
That means that the band will delay its next album, which was due out Aug. 6, and all upcoming tour plans, including their June 15 appearance at Clearwater.
In the statement, Jones said:
“Over the last few weeks I haven’t felt good and I didn’t know what was going on. We sadly had to cancel shows while I went through a series of tests and short hospital stays. We just found out that I have a stage-one tumor on my bile duct. Luckily we caught it really early and fast and the doctors say it’s operable and curable! I will be having surgery very soon and will have to rest and recover. I’ll be staying in touch and keeping my fans and friends updated on my progress. I’m looking forward to getting back on the road to give the people what they want!”
Best of luck to Sharon on her surgery and recovery…and we’ll let you know if Clearwater festival organizers announce a replacement artist. (Although with more than 100 acts, there’s plenty of talent on board to keep you headed to Croton Point Park that weekend!)
