“Sharknado,” the summer’s guilty pleasure, hasn’t quite jumped the shark yet. But tonight might put it over the top.
Two local theaters — the Regal in New Roc City in New Rochelle and the City Center 15 Cinema Deluxe in White Plains — will join about 200 others nationwide withmidnight showings of the epically over-the-top movie about waterspouts that drop sharks from the sky.
And, because a shark-dropping storm breaks all the rules (of believability and, well, sanity), the movie chains are actually encouraging people to break their rules and use their smartphones and share their thoughts in real-time on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, using the hashtag #SharknadoRegal.
This one-night-only event is presented by The Asylum and NCM Fathom Events. In L.A., cast and crew members will also attend the midnight show, presumably high and dry and safe from airborne fish.
“Usually we ask guests to keep the cell phones off during shows and not to distract others. But for ‘Sharknado’ half the fun is sharing a reaction, and hearing a riff from someone else,” stated Neal Pinsker senior vice president for Regal Entertainment Group. “For this special event, we’re setting the usual rules aside to let the audience share and really become part of the entertainment. This ‘Sharknado’ event will also include some biting comments from the film’s cast and crew tweeting their insights live in the same theater.”
The screening will also feature “never-before-seen footage about the making of ‘Sharknado,'” according a breathless press release.
“Sharknado,” which premiered on the Syfy channel on July 11, is about denizens of a beachside bar — bar owner Fin (Ian Ziering, “Beverly Hills 90210”), bartender Nova (Cassie Scerbo, “Make It Or Break It”) and local drunk George (John Heard, “Home Alone”) — who face the unusual storm with Fin’s ex-wife April (Tara Reid, “Scrubs”).
Tickets — which are $12.50 — can be purchased at the Fathom Events website, where you can input your ZIP code and find a theater nearby.
