Pop some popcorn and plop yourself on the couch at 9 p.m. — “Sleepy Hollow” premieres tonight on Fox.
The new series from the creators of “Fringe” has an exciting concept. As Fox explains it, it’s “a thrilling mystery-adventure drama series spanning two and a half centuries, in which resurrected [school teacher] Ichabod Crane pairs up with a present-day cop to save the enigmatic town of Sleepy Hollow — and the world — from unprecedented evil.”
But why should you care about this title on the long list of new fall shows? Here are five reasons TV lovers (local ones, especially) should watch “Sleepy Hollow” tonight:
1. Well, duh! There’s a local connection.
Fox’s “Sleepy Hollow” is based on the classic Washington Irving tale “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” You guessed it: the story is set in the quaint Lower Hudson Valley village to the north of Tarrytown. Irving, who lived and died in Tarrytown, is buried in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, near the Old Dutch Church prominently mentioned in the short story.
2. Sleepy Hollow is ready for the spotlight.
Even though the series is filmed in North Carolina, it will bring attention (and hopefully tourism) to its namesake town. “I think (the new show) is pretty cool for the village,” Mayor Kenneth Wray told LoHud’s Barbara Nacmkan. “It will promote the village and may make people think about us and want to see the real Sleepy Hollow.”
3. “Sleepy Hollow” is anything but sleepy.
In Fox’s retelling of the tale, a resurrected Ichabod Crane travels 250 years through time to save Sleepy Hollow from a level of evil the small town — or the world, for that matter — has never seen. If you’ve read the story, you can probably guess that Ichabod Crane’s nemesis, the frightening headless horseman, can be blamed for much of the evil the show’s writers have in store.
4. There will be mysteries to solve.
Should be interesting to see Ichabod Crane team up with a modern cop to solve a mystery dating back to the founding fathers. The mystery won’t be solved in one episode, so don’t be surprised if you lose your head (bad pun intended) over the show’s plot.
5. Actor Tom Mison makes for a hunky Ichabod Crane.
We’re just saying!
