Audra McDonald has Aretha Franklin’s R-E-S-P-E-C-T. The Queen of Soul wants the Tony-winning Croton-on-Hudson resident to play the lead role in a biopic about her life.
“It would be her job to bring it home,” Franklin said in an interview with Rolling Stone. “The question is whether she has that ability.”
Still, it isn’t clear if or when the movie will happen. There has been talk of the biopic for years now, with Halle Berry as Franklin’s first choice to step into her soulful shoes. The Oscar winner politely declined. “If I could carry a tune, I’d consider it…Someone should tell Aretha that I can’t do her justice,” she said in a 2011 interview.
Even though carrying a tune wouldn’t be a problem for McDonald, who recently played jazz legend Billie Holiday on Broadway, do you think she is the right actress to play the Queen of Soul? Tell us in the comments.
