Decades after it was featured in the 1973 cult classic “Ganja and Hess,” a song by Nyack jazz composer Sam Waymon has made it’s way into a modern remake of the film.
Waymon, who is the brother of music legend Nina Simone, gave director Spike Lee permission to feature “You’ve Got to Learn” in his vampire drama “Da Sweet Blood of Jesus,” inspired by the award-winning indie flick filmed in Nyack in 1973.
Waymon not only performed in the original “Ganja and Hess,” he was one of the creative forces behind the film, which was directed by late Tappan resident Bill Gunn and produced by Nyack’s Chiz Schultz.
Schultz also coproduces “Da Sweet Blood of Jesus,” which will be be released in theaters on Friday. It is also available for digital download.
