Mount Vernon’s own Heavy D was remembered by friends and fans on social media Sunday, the fourth anniversary of the iconic rapper/producer’s death. Among those paying tribute to the local legend: another hip-hop icon with roots in Mount Vernon.
“This Big Boy had style & could move like no other,” Hev’s former backup dancer Sean “Diddy” Combs wrote on Instagram, captioning a short video of “The Overweight Lover” dancing on stage. “One of my best friends and big brother!!! Miss you!! #ripHeavyD.”
Heavy D (real name: Dwight Myers) passed away on Nov. 8, 2011 after suffering a pulmonary embolism. Diddy, who says Heavy D helped him land a life-changing college internship at Uptown Records, returned to their Westchester hometown to attend the rap legend’s funeral, which was held at Grace Baptist Church on Nov. 18, 2011. Celebrities including John Legend and Jay Z were also in attendance.
